Coach FAQs

Common questions from coaches.

Getting Started

Do I need soccer experience to coach?

No. AYSO will teach you what you need to know. As long as you have a desire to help kids learn and have fun, you’re qualified.

What’s the time commitment?

  • 6U-8U: 60-minute practice weekly, plus Saturday games
  • 10U-14U: 90-minute practice weekly, plus Saturday games
  • Planning and communication: 30-60 minutes weekly

What training is required?

All coaches must complete:

  • Background check
  • SafeSport training
  • Safe Haven training
  • Concussion awareness
  • Cardiac arrest awareness
  • Age-specific coach certification

See Coach Training for details.

Equipment and Support

What equipment does AYSO provide?

Every coach receives a bag with:

  • Three balls
  • Pump
  • Cones
  • Pinnies
  • First aid kit
  • Laws of the Game booklet
  • Duffel bag

Many coaches add their own supplies over time.

Can I coach multiple teams?

Yes. Game scheduling can be adjusted to accommodate coaches with multiple teams.

Practices

How long are practices?

  • 6U-8U: 60 minutes
  • 10U-14U: 90 minutes

What if I can’t make a practice?

Arrange for another certified coach to cover. A fully certified coach must be present at all practices.

Where do I find practice plans?

Age-specific coaching manuals include practice activities. Additional resources are available through AYSOU.

Games

What if I can’t make a game?

Contact your Division Coach Administrator. The organization will help find a replacement.

Do all teams have assistant coaches?

Teams typically have both head and assistant coaches, but assistant coaches are required only for 6U-8U.

Players

How do player ratings work?

Coaches in 10U-14U rate players at the end of the season to help create balanced teams the following year. See Player Ratings.

What if a player is struggling?

Talk privately with parents about concerns. Focus on the child’s experience and development rather than performance. Contact your Division Coach Administrator for guidance on specific situations.
